Open Space | The Steve McQueen Residence, Hugh M. Kaptur, 1964

The Steve McQueen Residence in Palm Springs was built by Architect Hugh Kaptur in 1964. The homes first owner was music executive Buddy Morris, the home later became the desert retreat of Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, who owned it from 1969 to 1976 and is now currently owned by Lisa and her family who lovingly restored it and brought it back to life after years of neglect. Perched in the exclusive Southridge community, the house is known for its dramatic design—two glass-walled structures framed in steel, with a cantilevered living room offering sweeping views of the San Jacinto Mountains.

In 2017, Mark Haddawy initiated the restoration of the severely deteriorated home and in 2019, the Palm Springs City Council unanimously designated The Steve McQueen Residence as a Class 1 Historic Site, securing its preservation and honoring its architectural significance.

The restoration incorporated Roman brick, rough stucco, and pecky cypress alongside terrazzo and steel throughout the interiors. Notable features include hand-carved double-height doors and Spanish wrought iron fixtures that complement the home's multi-terraced layout. New Edward Fields carpets span wall to wall, framed by original pecky cypress walls, while terrazzo floors seamlessly transition from the indoors to the outdoor spaces. A striking vintage Hans-Agne Jakobsson chandelier now hangs above the dining area, with views extending out to the pool patio. The innovative use of steel allowed for open, light-filled interiors and striking overhangs that became signature elements of the home’s design.
