Open Space | The Courtyard Apartments, Craig Ellwood 1953
With rising house prices in Los Angeles, it may be difficult for some people to think that they can actually live in an Architecturally significant home without having to pay millions of dollars. However, if you look hard enough you’ll find yourself in Erin Starkweather's position. Erin currently lives in the famous Craig Ellwood Courtyard Apartments. Originally built between 1952 and 53’ the building consisted of 4 attached units which were then built for celebrity television host and producer Roy Maypole. Since then the property has been sold a couple of times and now is reduced to 3 total units with one of the units being merged into 1 bigger unit. You can get your slice of Modernism heaven in rental form, you just need to know where to look. Rentals of this sort come once in a blue moon due to tenants falling in love and staying long-term but sometimes the stars align perfectly. The units aren’t big in any way however, the way they are laid out and positioned within the community makes them live larger, and let’s not forget about the generous courtyard that comes with each unit. The indoor/outdoor floor of these units is what California Modernism is all about. From the floating staircase to the brick walls and steel beams throughout these are Craig Ellwood at his finest.
