The IT House, Linda Taalman, 2020
Our team traveled to the Eastern Sierras in the quiet town of Lone Pine to spend time with Karen and Gary Rathburn, owners of one of architect Linda Taalman’s iconic IT Houses, beautifully set against the dramatic landscape of the Alabama Hills and Mount Whitney.
Karen first acquired this special piece of land from her father, holding onto the dream that one day it would become a place to call home. Years later, that vision became a reality when Gary helped bring the project to life, building the home with love, patience, and deep care for the surrounding landscape. The result is a thoughtful retreat that feels completely connected to the raw beauty of the Eastern Sierras.
We also had the chance to catch up with architect Linda Taalman herself as she returned to visit the property and reunite with Karen and Gary. Hearing them reflect on the process, the memories, and the meaning behind the home while standing inside the very space they created together made this experience incredibly special. Moments like these are what make documenting architecture so meaningful.
