Open Space | The Leedy House, Gene Leedy 1956

Gene Leedy is a name that not many people may recognize, but he was a key figure in the Sarasota School of Architecture. This movement, Sarasota School of Architecture emphasized modernist principles and the integration of architecture with the local climate and landscape. Leedy collaborated with architect Paul Rudolph, a leading figure in this movement, before establishing his own practice in Winter Haven. There, he became one of the most prominent architects, contributing significantly to both residential and commercial projects in the city.

Max Strang is very familiar with Gene Leedy's work, having grown up in a Leedy-designed home in Winter Haven. Max's parents were good friends with the Leedy's, and this early exposure to Leedy's architecture unintentionally influenced Max to pursue a career in architecture. Max began his architectural career with Gene Leedy before founding Strang Design, which now has offices in Miami and Sarasota and has contributed countless of award winning designed homes throughout Florida.

When the opportunity arose to acquire and preserve the Leedy Residence and the commercial building where Gene worked, Max sprang into action. Max and his team meticulously restored both the home and office, reflecting their deep respect for Leedy's legacy. To share these spaces with the public, they established 'Double T,' a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the legacy of the late Florida architect Gene Leedy, FAIA. Double T's programming includes public tours, art exhibitions, design salons, artist and scholar residencies, lectures, and other engaging events.
